Android is heading to trial, after Oracle and Google failed to reach a
settlement in a dispute alleging Google's mobile OS infringes on Oracle's
ownership of Java patents.

**What's Happening**: The two tech giants have failed to reach a conclusion in
a long-brewing patent infringement case, and the matter will now be decided in
what will likely be a costly trial for both sides.
"Despite their diligent efforts and those of their able counsel, the parties
have reached an irreconcilable impasse in their settlement discussions," U.S.
Magistrate Judge Paul Grewal wrote in his decision.
Oracle originally sued Google for a variety of infringement claims, but
lengthy settlement attempts whittled down the case to two patents and a set of
copyright infringement claims.
A U.S. magistrate judge presided over the case, which seemed to veer against
Android when a Google engineer admitted to copying parts of code identical to
Oracle's, a patent the company received in a purchase with Sun Microsystems.
