Doing Battle With Middle-Age Spread
Do you remember what you looked like in your prom dress, or your wedding dress? What about your uniform or your first suit after college? If the image is just a memory, you've probably become the victim of middle-age spread, whatever your actual age may be. It is possible to reverse this trend and again have the body you want.
Weight gain or loss is a confusing and complex process. Anyone who says losing weight is simple is either ignorant or just blessed with a rare metabolism. Losing weight, especially approaching or after middle age, takes discipline and commitment. But it is possible by balancing the numbers (calories in and out) and understanding biology. You can learn how to turn the tables on weight gain and keep the pounds off.
There are three key elements to a successful weight loss and body resculpturing program:
- First, you must burn more calories each day than you take in to lose weight. Once the weight is gone, you absolutely must not revert back to a pattern of taking in slightly more calories each day than you burn. Counting every calorie consumed is not necessary to make the numbers work for you. All it really takes is making wise choices about the quality of calories consumed and choosing to give up one or two items that are not that good for you anyway, such as soda pop, for example, or that extra helping at mealtime.
- Second, you must increase your daily exercise to achieve your body sculpturing objectives. Weight loss can be achieved by just cutting calories, but to attain better health and a fitter body, you must add exercise to your regime. You don't have to hire a personal trainer--just start walking a little more every day, for example.
- Third, both patience and real commitment to the process are required. It's not wise to crash diet, trying to lose all the extra weight at once. What happens is that after crash dieting you just gain it all back with sometimes a bit more as well. Far better, both for your health and long-term success, is to lose weight slowly and steadily and get fully adjusted to the new healthy combination of balanced calories and enjoyable exercise.
You can get rid of that middle-age weight gain. You will be much more likely to succeed if you take responsibility and create your own fitness program by learning all you can about nutrition and exercise, then formulate your plan based on your own unique situation.
