Does a hard drive need to be plugged in for it to work?

Yeah, I'm a noob. So yeah, does it need to be plugged in? Also I was looking at the lacie neil poulton hard drive and I just wanted a move-able storage device that store a bunch of data and have good transfer rates. I was on the fence between getting the Patriot Xporter XT but I remain undecided. So, do you guys recommend me getting a big flash drive ( if you guys know a bigger/better flash drive than the Xporter XT feel free to mention ) or get the Terrabyte Lacie Neil Poulton? ( again, feel free to suggest a bigger/better hard drive than it ) Oh yeah, is the Seagate Freeagent Xtreme good?
Do you guys know why I put I'm a noob at the beginning of the details section? It's because I AM a noob at this. So why would you guys come up with sarcastic answers?

USB drives derive their power from the computer's USB port, regardless whether they're actual drives, or flash sticks - including my WD 160 GB drive.

The USB transfer rate is the weak link in the chain, so different makes and models won't make much difference in transfer rates.
