I have a pci usb 2.0 / firewire combo card with a weird problem.?
Why is it when I plug my firewire external hd in the card, my usb ports on the same card turn back to to usb 1.1 according to my bios? I have 2 external hd's, a usb 2.0 / firewire 400 320 gig Acomdata, and a 160 gig Acomdata usb 2.0. I gave up on it and am using them both as usb 2.0. I guess what I am asking is that why doesn't firewire and USB 2.0 want to work together on the same card? Before you even ask why I need to use my usb's on a card is because my Gigabyte MB's usb ports all of a sudden stopped working.I tried almost everything on my card and with the MB problem, any ideas??
This is a guess but it makes sense.
PCI does not have enough bandwidth to support both a full speed USB 2.0 connection and a full speed Firewire 800 connection or two USB 2.0 connections and a Firewire 400 connection. It looks like it could theoretically support USB 2.0 and Firewire 400 but with overhead it may not be able to support both of those either.
Therefore, I suspect that when the PCI card opens a Firewire channel, it allocates enough bandwidth to that channel that it has to throttle the USB channels down to USB 1.1.
